WhatsApp was the social media platform with the largest number of unique visitors (almost 35 million) among mobile social media users in Mexico as of March 2017. It was followed by YouTube with 32.6 million users. Facebook ranked third with 29.3 million unique visitors. Mark Zuckerberg’s social network was followed by its own messaging tool. Facebook Messenger recorded 26.1 million visitors in the measured period.
More Mexicans into WhatsApp
The messaging app – acquired by Facebook, Inc. in 2014 – is expected to continue its expansion in Mexico. Between 2017 and 2021, the number of WhatsApp users in the North American country was forecast to increase by over 20 percent, reaching nearly 80 million in the latter year. The instant messenger was particularly popular as a source of news. In 2020, almost three out of five Mexicans aged 55 and above used the app for this purpose.
YouTube en su bolsillo
This platform – controlled by Google since 2006 – may remain popular among mobile social media users in Mexico due to the frequency with which its registered users turn to their smartphones to watch videos. Nearly all YouTube users once surveyed in Mexico said they accessed the video-sharing platform from that type of portable device. As of July 2020, Production company Badabun and YouTuber Luis Arturo Villar Sudek (also known as Luisito Comunica) owned the most subscribed channels.
