Expenditure of Italian tourists abroad as a share of GDP 2010-2020
The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic disrupted international tourism in 2020, as countries worldwide implemented emergency measures and travel restrictions to limit the spread of the virus. In Italy, the expenditure of outbound tourists as a share of the Italian gross domestic product (GDP) declined sharply in 2020 over the previous year. Overall, while outbound tourism spending accounted for 1.5 percent of Italy's GDP in 2019, it represented 0.6 percent of GDP in 2020.
