In 2023, a study found that the share of adult smokers in Brazil reached around 9.3 percent of respondents. By age group, more than 10 percent of adults aged between 35 and 44 years affirmatively answered when asked whether they were current smokers, making it the age group with most current smokers in the South American country, followed closely by those aged between 25 and 34 years, who accounted for almost 10 percent that year.

Respondents were asked whether they were smoking currently, regardless of the number of cigarettes smoked and frequency.

The survey was carried out in the capital city of each of the 26 Brazilian states, plus the Federal District of Brasília.
