This statistic gives information on the annual number of index option trades on the Italian Derivatives Market (IDEM) from 2007 to 2017. It can be seen that there were sizeable fluctuations in the number of trading transactions throughout the period, with a peak of around 930 thousand trades as of 2008. Conversely, the lowest number of trades was found in 2017 (roughly 432 thousand units).

*The IDEM (Italian Derivatives Market) is part of Borsa Italiana and it allows trades of futures contracts on indices, equities and commodities such as electricity, as well as mini contracts.

An index option is a financial derivative that gives the holder the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell the value of an underlying index.

A trade is a business event in which two parties agree to enter into a contract or contracts. It is not to be confused with a contract, which is a legal agreement between two parties.
