In 2023, Deliveroo featured among the top five food delivery operators worldwide, ranking behind industry heavyweights like Uber Eats, Just Eat Takeaway.com, and DoorDash. That same year, the UK-based food delivery company saw its gross transaction value exceed the seven-billion-pound threshold worldwide, up from only 1.6 billion pounds in 2018.

Competition, profitability, and other woes

The path to the top was not without its challenges. Between 2020 and 2022, Deliveroo’s operating loss was consistently in the 200-million-pound territory, until the company managed to reduce this figure to 32 million pounds by 2023. With fierce competition in the industry and ballooning losses, the company had to announce several market exits beginning with the German market in 2021, and notably the Australian and Dutch markets in 2022.
