TV set unit sales worldwide 2018 and 2019, by region

Around 214 million TV set units were sold worldwide in 2018, and this figure was forecast to remain steady in 2019. In terms of global distribution, Asia was expected to maintain its position as the leading seller of TV sets in 2019, with an estimated sales volume of 83 million units.

Television unit sales: Asia is calling the shots

Asia was forecast to remain the region with the highest television set sales share in 2019, accounting for approximately 38 percent of TV sales worldwide. Despite the growing popularity of other consumer electronic devices, television still enjoys great relevance in this region, as is reflected in the amount of money spent annually on TV advertising. Screen sizes in Asia have been growing for years, and while the average selling price of 604 U.S. dollars per TV set is comparatively expensive, the region’s powerhouse China sports prices that fall well below the global average.

Global TV shipments are controlled by Asia-based vendors

The global TV market has been dominated by a handful of major brands for years. While South Korean frontrunners Samsung and LG Electronics continue to take the lead in terms of TV unit shipments, they face growing pressure from Chinese competitors. Shipments of Samsung TVs amounted to 10.41 million units in the third quarter of 2019, and although Chinese electronics companies like Xiaomi and Hisense have not yet reached the five-million-unit shipment mark, they are well underway.
