Leading insurance companies in the Netherlands by revenue 2016-2022

Zilveren Kruis Achmea's health division was the largest Dutch insurance company in 2022, with just over 10 billion euros worth of gross written premiums. The first four entries in this ranking were all health or life insurance companies, with only the sixth ranking (Achmea Schade) being a company that focuses on property and casualty insurance. Health insurance companies tend to be the biggest insurance companies of the country, sometimes having more than one million policy holders.

Why are the numbers provided per branch, and not for the company as a whole?

Insurance companies in the Netherlands each have multiple branches that operate separately from one another. This, among other reasons, has to do with how health insurance is set up in the country. Simply put, the Dutch government decides the content of the national health insurance (which every Dutch resident must get). It is the private market, however, which rolls this out and sets the prices. The Dutch health authority, then, checks the financial status of the companies. Financial results of the Dutch insurance market

The technical results of Dutch insurance branches, as a percentage of the gross earned premiums, were under pressure in 2019. Due to the artificially low interest rates of the European Central Bank's (ECB) monetary policy, Dutch insurance companies struggled to make profits, as their investments become less valuable. Also, they had to compensate more money to their insured, for example because of damage due to extreme weather conditions or the ageing of the population. However, most insurance sectors had more favorable technical results by 2021.
