Gaborone (Botswana) was one of the cities in Africa with the highest construction costs for schools in 2023, while Maputo and Lagos were among the most expensive for hospital construction. An average primary and secondary school in Maputo (Mozambique) cost over 1,230 U.S. dollars per square meter to build. Lagos was also one of the African cities with the highest construction costs for residential buildings that same year.
