Inbound coastal tourists in the Netherlands 2008-2018

From 2008 to 2018, the number of inboud coastal tourists increased steadily in the Netherlands. In 2018, the number of inbound coastal tourists reached notably 2.77 million. Observing domestic coastal tourism, the total number of coastal holidays amounted to nearly 3.2 million. Most of these holidays were spent in the North Sea region, whereas roughly one million holidays were in the Wadden Sea region.

Most coastal holidays were spent in bungalows and hotels

Categorizing the inbound coastal holidays by accommodation type, a large share of the tourist stayed overnight in bungalow and hotel accommodations. Approximately 1.07 million bungalow holidays were undertaken, whereas slightly less holidays were spent at hotel accommodations. The same development can be seen for domestic coastal holidays, as 846,000 were spent in a bungalow and nearly 785,000 at hotels, youth accommodations or hostels.

Annual increase in number of tourists

In 2018, 19 billion tourists in total visited the Netherlands for leisure or business purposes. Furthermore, it is forecasted that by 2019 this will reach 20 million tourists, and in 2020 will increase by another one million tourists in total.
