Green bonds are fixed income securities which finance investments with environmental or climate-related benefits. In 2019, HSBC was the European bank leader in green bond underwriting in emerging markets, with approximately three million U.S. dollars in green bonds underwritten. In Europe, the highest value of green bonds issued was recorded in France, almost twice as much as the runner-up, Germany.
