Loans were the leading type of financial assets held by depository corporations, accounting for 22 percent of the total financial assets of financial institutions, which amounted to over 4.4 quadrillion Japanese yen.

**"Other financial institutions" for Japan are the sum of securities investment trusts, other financial intermediaries, financial auxiliaries, and public captive financial institutions.
