As of the first quarter of 2019, the market for power supply of major and average-sized nonresidential sites was offered mainly by historical electricity suppliers, whereas small sites and residential sites received electricity at regulated tariffs: More than 70 percent of residential sites were supplied with electricity by the French supplier Électricité de France (EDF) at regulated tariffs.
Electricity market in France
On the French electricity market, historical suppliers – considered as such when commercializing or having commercialized energy at regulated tariffs – hold a market share of more than 70 percent. This share has however declined from 79 percent in the first quarter of 2018 to 74 percent in early 2019. Meanwhile, the market share of alternative electricity suppliers has increased continuously during the same period and reached 23 percent in the first quarter of 2019.
Expectations towards power supply among the French
The importance of low electricity prices is something that 63 percent of French people mentioned when answering to a survey regarding the most important aspects of electricity in April 2019. In second place came the expectation of limited environmental impacts of power production for half of respondents to the same survey. Indeed, more than half of French surveyed in 2017 considered that investments in the electricity sector should be assigned in priority to renewable energies before nuclear power. Still, the French public opinion was rather evenly split between supporters of nuclear electricity production and critics.
