Number of government hospital beds in urban India 2020-2022, by state
Urban-rural divide
There were a higher number of public hospitals in rural India compared to urban parts of the country, with over 21 thousand and about four thousand respectively in 2018. Rural healthcare infrastructure was divided into three tiers in the country - sub-centers, primary health centers and community health centers.
Public healthcare discrepancies
Rural India had over 265 thousand hospital beds in the same time duration. Despite the higher volume of beds, rural areas faced a shortage of qualified healthcare professionals, with an average of just one doctor for every primary health care center. These factors have made public healthcare a big concern in both urban as well as rural areas in the country.
