Despite the significant annual increase, inbound hotel arrivals in the Italian capital remained below the figures reported before the COVID-19 pandemic, reaching 5.4 million in 2023. That said, the number of inbound overnight stays in Rome's hotels exceeded pre-pandemic levels in 2023.

Domestic tourism in Rome's hotels

As the number of inbound hotel guests did not fully recover from the impact of COVID-19 while the number of nights peaked in 2023, domestic tourism figures followed a similar trend. That year, the number of domestic arrivals in hotels in Rome totaled approximately 2.5 million, denoting a decline of roughly 400,000 from 2019. In contrast, the number of international overnight stays in Rome's hotels surpassed nine million in 2023, the highest figure to date.

Most hotels were rated as three-star, although the number of four-star hotels was also significant. Despite Rome’s great popularity among both international and domestic travelers, the destination was not the most expensive Italian city to book an overnight stay in a four-star hotel in 2024.
