Number of hotel overnight stays in Rome 2012-2022
The total number of overnight stays in Rome's hotels increased sharply in 2022 compared to the first two years of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, but remained below pre-pandemic levels. After peaking at roughly 24.5 million in 2019, total overnight stays - including inbound and domestic travelers - dropped to 5.4 million in 2020, then bounced back to more than 22 million in 2022.
The distribution of hotels in Rome
When looking at the distribution of hotels in Rome, the historical city center stood out based on the number of establishments. Rome is organized into fifteen sub-municipalities, known in Italy as municipi. In 2021, Municipio I – Historical Center - Prati counted more than 600 hotels. Considering the total number of hotels in Rome, the historical center accounted for roughly 70 percent of such establishments.
Municipio I: the heart of travel establishments in Rome
Rome’s Municipio I is the sub-municipality that includes the archeological site of the Roman Forum, the Circus Maximus, and the Baths of Caracalla. The contribution of this municipio to the city’s tourism market does not stop at hotels. In 2021, this area also recorded the highest number of short-term vacation rentals and bed and breakfasts in Rome.
