Starbucks stores in Spain 2021, by region

As of September 2021, the Community of Madrid hosted the largest number of Starbucks stores in Spain, totting up to 50 outlets. With 29 coffeehouses of this American chain, Catalonia ranked second in the list. However, the number of Starbucks stores in the Iberian country is still significantly lower than that of other major countries. The United Kingdom, for instance, was the country in Europe with the largest number of Starbucks stores, clocking up over seven hundred in the first quarter of 2021.

The coffee shop chain market in Spain

In the past decade, the number of coffee shop franchises in Spain remained relatively stagnant. Besides Starbucks, other brands operating in this European market are Dunkin’ Coffee, Loops and Coffee, Tuplyn Coffee, Juan Valdez, Ingredients Café, and theDoger Café, among others. The latter company, founded in Spain in 2019, combines beverage serving activities with adoption services for puppies looking for a home. Customers of this coffeehouse can feed and share time with the dogs and decide if they will be able and willing to adopt one.

How much coffee do Spaniards drink?

For the past years, the annual average consumption of coffee by Spanish households has remained at around 1.5 kilos. In total, Spain consumes more than 70 million kilograms of roasted, natural, decaffeinated, or instant coffee as well as coffee blend. The price of a kilogram of coffee in that European country increased steadily in the past decade, going up 12 euros to more than 15.5 euros in 2019.
