Leading companies by revenue in consumer healthcare segment globally 2017

Some pharmaceutical companies are diversified companies, generating revenues through a number of product types, for example through consumer healthcare products. In 2017, the top global pharmaceutical companies based on consumer healthcare revenue were Johnson & Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline, and Bayer. During that year Johnson & Johnson made 13.6 billion U.S. dollars in consumer healthcare revenues while GlaxoSmithKline made 10.5 billion U.S. dollars.

The global pharmaceutical industry

The global pharmaceutical industry involves many different companies and products. As of 2018, the top pharmaceutical companies based on prescription sales and research and development expenses included Pfizer, Roche and Novartis. The pharmaceutical industry has seen a lot of growth in recent years and is expected to grow further. It is projected that the greatest pharmaceutical industry growth will occur in India, China and Indonesia. Despite the large growth in regions outside of the U.S. it is estimated that the U.S. will continue to maintain its important role in pharmaceutical growth and development in the future.

Pharmaceutical products

There are many products, available to healthcare consumers globally. Humira, by AbbVie, a drug used in the treatment of select autoimmune disorders, was the top revenue generating global pharmaceutical in 2018, followed by Elquis. Among cancer drugs, Revlimid, marketed by Celgene, was the top revenue generating drug during that same year. On top of the already existing drugs used globally, there are even more new drugs and compounds discovered and approved every year.
