Share of foreign overnight guests in Japan 2021, by accommodation type
In 2021, city hotels in Japan accommodated the largest share of foreign guests, with about 3.4 percent of overnight guests being inbound travelers. The share of overnight stays by international travelers declined significantly after the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, as Japan imposed restrictions on inbound travel, resulting in a low number of non-Japanese travelers in the country.
