In 2023, McDonald’s had 605 restaurants in Spain, Andorra, and Gibraltar. The American burger-specialized chain has been working on its expansion in Spain over the last years, increasing by nearly 200 its number of restaurants since 2010.

The American burger chain was the preferred fast food brand of Spaniards in 2021, being the favorite of roughly 27 percent of respondents. The runner up was a restaurant of the same country and type of food – Burger King – chosen by about 24 percent of interviewees. The revenue of the McDonald’s Corporation worldwide in 2021 was over 23 billion U.S. dollars, a growth of more than 20 percent over the previous year. The golden arches saw their peak in 2013, however, and the general trend since then was negative.

The fast food industry in Spain

The revenue of quick-service restaurants in Spain in 2021 was 3.85 billion euros. While this represented a growth of almost 30 percent compared to the previous year, it is still smaller than the peak hit in 2019. This industry had a growing trend until 2020 when the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit. However, while the share of Spanish people who visited fast-food restaurants decreased in 2020, it was still higher than what was observed in 2018. The declining trend continued into 2021, the year that had the lowest share since 2010, at 23.1 percent.
