As of June 2017, eight out of ten internet users surveyed in Brazil said that they did not have an account on any dating app. Meanwhile, ten percent stated that they had used Tinder, whereas eight percent of respondents mentioned Badoo — both apps also led the online dating market worldwide.
Love in the time of COVID-19
Shortly after Brazil recorded its first cases of the novel coronavirus disease, in the first quarter of 2020, the percentage of dating app installs peaked. That, however, did not necessarily impacted the sales through one of the front-runners of this segment. The monthly in-app purchase revenue of Tinder in Brazil was on a downward trend even before the pandemic, declining by nearly 60 percent between March 2019 and March 2020. Whereas stable profitability remains a challenge, dating mobile apps continue to examine its target audience’s preferences.
More party, less partisanship
When asked to list the three most important elements of their lives, the second aspect Brazilians respondents mentioned the most was a happy relationship. Meanwhile, the second feature participants of that May 2020 survey cited the least was social justice. Later that year, dating app Happn conducted a study showing that four out five of its Brazilian users did not include their political views on their profiles. Similarly, 70 percent of respondents agreed that politics is not a topic for a first meeting, suggesting that “date” does not always rhyme with “debate.”
