The fertility rate is the average number of children per woman. In France in 2020, women had an average of 1.83 children. This value was the lowest since 2005. Indeed, the fertility rate remained stable between 2005 and 2014. Since that year, the number of children per woman has been falling steadily. As a reminder, the generation renewal threshold is set at 2.05 children per woman. That is to say, as of 2020, France cannot hope to keep the same number of inhabitants only with natural growth. France still remains the country with the highest fertility rate in the European Union. In the United Kingdom, for instance, the fertility rate reached 1.56 in 2020.
