A gamers-first communication platform

Discord is a social and voice-over-internet platform (VoIP) that was tailor-made to answer the needs of online gamers. The platform, which was launched in 2015, allows users to join or create their communities (called ‘servers’) in which they can add specific channels for voice, video, and text communication. Having seen its origins, it does not come as a surprise that over six in Discord users listed technology and gaming as their main interests. Additionally, the most popular servers on the platforms are dedicated to popular online games Valorant and Apex Legend, with thousand and thousand members in August 2022.

In April 2021, Discord was offered billion U.S. dollars from Microsoft, but rejected the offer and has been estimated to be looking to enter the public market in the next years. The platform’s business model does not include online advertising, as Discord monetizes exclusively by direct user subscriptions to its premium product Discord Nitro. In 2021, Discord generated million U.S. dollars in revenues from its mobile app alone.
