How many people are registered on Discord?

Between May 2017 and June 2020, the gaming chat app increased its registered user number from 45 million to over 300 million. In comparison, approximately 150 million Discord users were active on the platform every month in September 2021. According to surveys conducted among messenger users in July 2022, 14 percent of respondents in the United States, as well as 10 percent of respondents in the United Kingdom reported engaging with Discord.

A gamers-first communication platform

Discord is a social and voice-over-internet platform (VoIP) that was tailor-made to answer the needs of online gamers. The platform, which was launched in 2015, allows users to join or create their communities (called ‘servers’) in which they can add specific channels for voice, video, and text communication. Having seen its origins, it does not come as a surprise that over six in 10 Discord users listed technology and gaming as their main interests. Additionally, the most popular servers on the platforms are dedicated to popular online games Valorant and Apex Legend, with 950 thousand and 740 thousand members in August 2022.

While Discord has not released its revenue numbers, the company has secured almost one billion U.S. dollars in funding across 16 rounds as of March 2022. In April 2021, Discord was offered 12 billion U.S. dollars from Microsoft, but rejected the offer and has been estimated to be looking to enter the public market in the next years. The platform’s business model does not include online advertising, as Discord monetizes exclusively by direct user subscriptions to its premium product Discord Nitro. In 2021, Discord generated 95 million U.S. dollars in revenues from its mobile app alone.
