In 2020, BMW sold 2,284 new motorcycles in the Netherlands, making it the market leader. The Japanese brand Yamaha followed closely with 2,234 new motorbike registrations. Of the big motorcycle brands, the decline in Honda motorcycle sales around 2018 was noticeable, and has been offset during the past few years, when the brand climbed to the fourth position in the rankings. The drop was due to organizational reasons in the Benelux region.
Motorcycles remained popular during the pandemic
The interest in two-wheelers did not slow down during the economic downturn brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. As of 2020, there were roughly 1.47 million registered motorcycle driving licenses in the Netherlands. This number increased steadily on a yearly basis, with figures growing by almost two percent between 2019 and 2020. Most registrations could be found among 50-to 60-year-olds: roughly 439,500 of all driving licenses. Millennials were less into the two-wheeled vehicles: around 24,100 of all licenses were registered to people younger than 30.
Naked motorcycle sales lead a diverse market
In 2019, the most popular motorcycle engines had a cylinder capacity over 1,000cc, which is the capacity generally associated with the Superbikes segment. More than 4,000 of these bikes were sold. Motorcycles with a cylinder capacity between 651 and 850cc reached a sales volume of around 2,700 that year. That same year, the most popular types of motorcycles in the Netherlands were street bikes and “nakeds” motorcycles (motorcycles with partial or no covering), which reached over 4,200 units sold.
