Share of residents who are renters in the U.S. 2022, by age

People under the age of 30 comprised the largest share of renters in the U.S. in 2022. Almost half of the population that lives in a rental apartment fell in this age group, while the eldest generation of 65-year-olds and older accounted for 10 percent. This disparity can be explained by the vast differences in homeownership rates between these age groups.
