Construction order value for civil engineering works in Japan FY 2013-2022

In the fiscal year 2022, the value of construction orders for civil engineering works received by 50 major constructors in Japan amounted to 5.24 trillion Japanese yen. Compared to the previous year, the order value increased by 11.3 percent.

Civil engineering spending

Civil engineering investments have declined in recent years. The public sector accounted for the largest share of civil engineering investments in Japan. Broken down by purpose, order values were the highest for civil engineering works on railway and road construction. Prefectural governments’ expenses on civil engineering works were largely directed at roads and bridges. As a substantial part of the infrastructure in Japan was built in the 1960s and 1970s, infrastructure maintenance is expected to become a key issue in the future.

Railway construction in Japan

The annual value of orders for railway construction in Japan has overall increased throughout the past decade. Several railway construction projects were launched in recent years, such as the construction of Japan’s first maglev train line, the Chuo Shinkansen. Other projects included the extension of several bullet train lines. In Japan, high-speed train construction is coordinated by the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency (JRTT). JRTT is also involved in overseas infrastructure projects.
