As of May 2018, the highest smoking rate of Japanese women was in Hokkaido with about 15.5 percent, followed by Tohoku with around 10.5 percent. In contrast, almost every third men living in Hokkaido and Tohoku is smoking, surpassing the smoking rate of the female population significantly.
