The number grew rapidly from 2012 to 2014, the first years after the Syrian Civil War broke out, and has remained stable between six and seven millions since. At the end of 2024, long-ruling Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was ousted in an offensive by the HTS militia, a significant turning point in the civil war.
