Number of petrol-electric hybrid car registrations in Italy 2010-2021

The number of petrol-electric hybrid cars registrations in Italy experienced a strong positive trend over the past 11 years, from just 4,843 units in 2010, to around 434,300 units in 2021. The same steady trend cannot be noticed when considering diesel-electric cars. Nevertheless, the sales of diesel-electric cars skyrocketed in 2020 and 2021.

Hybrid cars ranked second

As reported in a survey on car purchase intentions, 28 percent of the respondents were planning on buying a diesel car. Hybrid cars were ranked second; approximately 21 percent of the respondents were planning to get a hybrid car when purchasing their next car. By contrast, only four percent of the respondents were going to acquire an electric car, while eight percent were planning on buying a natural gas vehicle.

Expectations on car types popularity by 2030

According to the data, almost 40 percent of the respondents believed that hybrid cars would become the most popular car type in Italy by 2030, while 17 percent thought that electric cars will become the most widespread type. By contrast, natural gas cars were not particularly expected to become the prevailing type of car.
