Number of registered electric passenger cars in Sweden 2009-2020

As in other European countries, the number of electric cars in use in Sweden strongly increased in the last decade. While there were 157 electric cars registered in 2009, the number amounted to almost 56,000 as of 2020. Additionally, the number of electric vehicles in operation more than tripled between 2018 and 2020.

Electric car charging stations in Sweden

Along with the growth of electric vehicles, the available infrastructure of charging stations of PEVs (plug-in and electric vehicles) also increased. While the number of charging stations amounted to roughly 500 in Sweden in 2012, nearly 6,000 charging stations were recorded in 2018. In that regard, the normal charging station (less than 22 kilowatts) is still the most common one, but the amount of fast charging stations is on the rise.

Sweden’s large electric car market

In 2019, Sweden had the second-largest market share of newly registered electric vehicles in Europe: more than nine percent. Electric car sales picked up steam in European countries in 2020. In the first quarter of 2021, battery electric vehicles accounted for about 5.7 percent of new registrations in the European Union.
