Visitors to State museums with both free and paying entrance in Italy 2000-2020

In 2020, the number of visitors to State museums in Italy decreased sharply over the previous year, due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As the government implemented emergency orders to contain the spread of the virus, cultural institutions had to close to the public for several months. As a result, the number of visitors to State museums dropped from roughly 14 million in 2019 to approximately 4.4 million in 2020. Overall, the total number of visitors to State museums and similar cultural institutions in Italy reached around 13.3 million in 2020.
