Between 2010 and 2023, the fertility rate in Italy experienced a decrease. An Italian woman had 1.44 children in 2010, while in 2020 this figure lowered to 1.24. In 2021, there was a slight increase in fertility rate, with an average of 1.25 babies per woman. In 2023, the figure diminished to 1.2 newborns per female.
Total fertility rate represents the number of children that would be born to a woman if she were to live to the end of her childbearing years and bear children in accordance with age-specific fertility rates of the specified year.
