This statistic displays the results of a youth survey conducted among 15-34 year olds in 19 states across India in 2016 about the share of young adults, based on their caste of marriage. A majority of respondents, about 92 percent, married someone from within their own caste, while only four percent of respondents stated that had an inter-caste marriage during the survey period.

The traditional caste system in India forbids marriage outside the caste. But since independence, discrimination based on castes in various religions is banned by the constitution. According to a survey in 2014, about five percent of marriages are inter-caste in the country.
