This statistic displays the results of a youth survey conducted among 15-34 year olds across 19 states across India in 2016 about the attitude towards inter-caste marriages. A majority of respondents, about 36 percent, did not approve of inter-caste marriages, while about 33 percent approved during the survey period.

The traditional caste system in India forbids marriage outside the caste. But since independence, discrimination based on castes in various religions is banned by the constitution. According to a survey in 2014, about five percent of marriages are inter-caste in the country.
