Debit and credit cards at point-of-sale had the highest volume with about 253 million, while Unified Payments Interface had the lowest volume with just over four million during the measured time period.
On November 8, 2016, the government announced demonetization of all 500 and 1,000 Indian rupee banknotes attempting to crack down on illicit and counterfeit cash that was allegedly funding illegal activity and terrorism. This led to weeks of cash shortages, creating a significant disruption in the Indian economy.
