This statistic represents the number of point of sale (POS) transactions post demonetization across India in October and November 2016. POS transactions increased to about 10 million in November 2016 from about five million in the previous month.
On November 8, 2016, the government announced demonetization of all 500 and 1,000 Indian rupee banknotes attempting to crack down on illicit and counterfeit cash that was allegedly funding illegal activity and terrorism. This led to weeks of cash shortages, creating a significant disruption in the Indian economy.
