Since 2011, the number of smartphone shipments in China has steadily increased, reaching over 100 million units in the first quarter of 2014 alone. For all of 2014, over 390 million smartphones were shipped in China. This figure is forecast to drop to about 370 million units in 2015. Regardless of this small decline, more smartphones were sold in China than in any other country in the world. In 2015, China was responsible for almost 30 percent of the smartphone shipments worldwide. The country is forecast to maintain its leadership, as China is projected to account for about a quarter of the worldwide smartphone shipments in 2019.
Almost 60 percent of the Chinese mobile phone users are expected to use a smartphone by 2018. In 2014, there were 482.7 million smartphone users in China. By 2019, this figure is expected to almost reach the 690 million mark. Samsung and Apple are forecast to sell the most smartphones in China, with 65 million units and 36 million units respectively in 2015. In terms of operating systems, Google’s Android holds more than 70 percent of the market share, whereas Apple’s iOS accounts for about 25 percent of the smartphone operating system market in China.
