Number of Lidl stores in the Netherlands 2012-2024

During the period under review, the number of Lidl supermarkets in the Netherlands increased until 2021, going from 365 locations in 2012 to 438 in 2021. The latter figure remained stable in the following years.

In terms of number of stores, other German discounter chain Aldi ranked above Lidl, as it counted  487 branches in the Netherlands in 2024.

Market share 

Despite counting fewer locations, Lidl had a larger market share than Aldi in 2024, amounting specifically to 11.1 percent. This made Lidl the third-largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands. Meanwhile, Aldi had a market share of approximately five percent that year. Albert Heijn was the leading grocery retailer in the country, with a market share of close to 38 percent.
