In terms of number of stores, other German discounter chain Aldi ranked above Lidl, as it counted 487 branches in the Netherlands in 2024.
Despite counting fewer locations, Lidl had a larger market share than Aldi in 2024, amounting specifically to 11.1 percent. This made Lidl the third-largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands. Meanwhile, Aldi had a market share of approximately five percent that year. Albert Heijn was the leading grocery retailer in the country, with a market share of close to 38 percent.
