Number of Lidl supermarkets in the Netherlands 2012-2022
Between 2012 and 2022, the number of Lidl supermarkets increased from 365 supermarkets in 2012 to 440 in 2022. Most of these Lidl supermarkets could be found in the South-Holland province, which includes major cities as Rotterdam and The Hague. This province was home to over 80 Lidl supermarkets. By comparison, there were less than ten Lidl supermarkets in Flevoland.
Lidl popular among larger households…
In 2021, Lidl had a penetration rate of close to 41 percent in the Netherlands. Lidl was especially popular among the larger households. Among households consisting of five persons or more, the penetration rate was considerably higher, at just under 48 percent. On the other hand, among the single-person households Lidl had a penetration rate of less than 34 percent.
… such as the well-to-do households with children
Of the Lidl customers, the largest group consisted of the well-to-do households with children. This household type made up nearly 20 percent of the total customer base in 2017. Couples with a double income tend to shop less frequently at Lidl. Just over seven percent of Lidl’s customers consisted of this household type.
