Number of Mount Fuji climbers in Japan 2010-2024
During the 2024 summer climbing season, around 204.32 thousand people climbed Mount Fuji in Japan. The figure decreased compared to the previous season. Apart from the climbing season in summer, trails and huts are closed, and climbing the volcano is prohibited during the rest of the year. The trails to Mt. Fuji were closed during the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The peak of the archipelago
Mt. Fuji is an active stratovolcano and the highest mountain on the Japanese archipelago, with a height of 3,776 meters. Located within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, one of the largest national parks in Japan, the landmark is a well-known national symbol.
The summit of the volcano is accessible via four major trails named Yoshida, Fujinomiya, Subashiri and Gotemba. The majority of mountaineers who attempt to ascend Mt. Fuji follow the Yoshida trail due to the high accessibility to parking spaces for private vehicles, as well as resting places, shops, and first aid centers on the way to the summit.
Mountaineering in Japan
Japan has a mountainous topography, allowing for various mountain-related outdoor activities. About one in ten Japanese participate in mountain climbing or hiking as a leisure activity. As a national symbol, Mt. Fuji is especially attractive to overseas visitors, with the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park standing as the most popular national park among foreign tourists in Japan.
