There were approximately 395 projects in the commercial carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities pipeline worldwide in 2023. 43 of these were operational, while almost 190 were in early development. The majority of projects in the CCS facilities pipeline are located in North America.
CCS is a process of sequestration where carbon dioxide emitted from large power plants or heavy industries is captured and stored before reaching the atmosphere.
