Volume of chickpeas produced worldwide 2022, by country

Over the last several years, India has been the top producer of chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, worldwide. In 2022, the production volume of chickpeas in India amounted to over 13.5 million metric tons. Australia came in second at an estimated 876.5 thousand metric tons of chickpeas. In that year around 18.1 million metric tons of chickpeas were produced worldwide.

Chickpeas, like all legumes, are a good source of protein and fiber, making them a popular source of protein for vegans and vegetarians. In the United States, chickpeas were among the five leading pulses based on sales value.

Pulse production worldwide

Pulses are a kind of edible seed which include beans, lentils, peas, and chickpeas to name a few. In 2022, some 96 million metric tons of pulses were produced worldwide, up from 50.19 million metric tons in 2015. Beans are the most commonly grown type of pulse, at 22.55 million metric tons as of 2017. Lentils are another popular pulse, at 13.34 million metric tons in that same year.
