This statistic shows the annual alcohol index in Sweden from 2010 to 2019. The index is based on annually conducted surveys. Over the period of consideration, the index slightly increased and shows a slightly growing permissiveness towards alcohol. Whereas the index was 61.7 in 2010, it had risen to 62.6 in 2016. In the years that followed, it decreased again and amounted to 61.4 in 2018 and 61.6 in 2019. An index of 0 would mean that alcohol consumption meets with a big refusal, while an index of 100 would mean the total acceptance by the society.
This statistic is based on annual surveys with each 4,141 respondents aged 16 years and older, conducted from 2010 to 2016 in the same period of each year.
The source adds the following information: "The higher the index, the more restrained is the attitude. Respondents had to decide whether or not agreeing to nine statements. By answering 'completely wrong', the highest index value is generated, while the answer 'completely correct' gives the lowest index value, which is the most permissive attitude to alcohol."
The statements used to calculate the index were as follows:
1. Drinking occasionally so that you feel affected.
2. Getting occasionally drunk at private parties.
3. Getting occasionally drunk at company parties.
4. Selling beer and wine to the audience at major sports events.
5. Giving alcohol as a gift to someone you do not know so well.
6. Getting drunk when eating dinner at a restaurant.
7. Drinking so much that you feel bad the next day.
8. Getting drunk when children are with you.
9. Drinking so much that it's afterwards hard to remember how much it actually was.
