Plastic fragments and cigarettes' butts were the most widespread items of beach litter on Italian beaches in 2020, with 34 percent of the collected items. Polystyrene pieces followed, accouting for 12 percent for the collected waste. Caps ranked third, which made up seven percent of the items collected.
On 43 monitored beaches (over 189 thousand square meters), volunteers found over 80 thousand pieces of waste, with an average of 654 items of waste per 100 linear meters of beach.
