As for food products, PDO and PGI quality labels indicate products from specific places or regions, with higher quality due to the product’s origin and manufacturing procedure.
Main regions
In 2023, the largest number of quality wines was produced in Piedmont and Tuscany, with 60 and 58 wines, respectively. Veneto followed with 53 wines, while Lombardy ranked fourth with 41 wines. Data from 2021 about production volumes saw Veneto heading the ranking among the Italian regions, with a produced volume of over nine million and 1.9 million hectoliters of PDO and PGI wines, respectively.
Exported wines
PDO wine was reported to have the highest export value. In the first six months of 2023, Italy exported 853 million euros in PDO red wine and 594 million euros in PDO white wine. In general, PDO still wine reached a higher export value.
