According to data, the greatest number of bank branches was found among the so-called major banks (almost 13 thousand branches around the country), whereas small banks had around 3.4 thousand branch offices in Italy.

The five groups are identified as follows:
- major bank: average intermediate funds over 60 billion euros;
- large bank: average intermediate funds between 26 and 60 billion euros;
- medium bank: average intermediate funds between 9 and 26 billion euros;
- small bank: average intermediate funds between 1.3 and 9 billion euros;
- minor bank: average intermediate funds less than 1.3 billion euros.
