This statistic shows the share of young people (under 35 years) and older people (over 55 years) on the housing market in the Netherlands from 2006 to 2016. The proportion of young people on the Dutch housing market declined to approximately 40 percent in 2016, while the number of older buyers and sellers increased to approximately 17 percent.
Multiple reasons can be named for the increase of older people on the housing market. Besides the structural decline in the number of births, the generous gift tax allowance and the low interest rates on mortgages makes it more attractive to buy a new house. Indeed, the value of mortgages are expected to increase in 2018 with approximately four percent compared to the year before.
