Revenue of the food service industry in Belgium 2005-2020, by sector
In 2020, the revenue of the restaurant industry in Belgium amounted to approximately 6.6 billion euros. This represented a loss compared to the previous years and was a direct consequence of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Furthermore, similar results were observed in the catering industry. Its revenue decreased from 2.4 billion euros in 2019 to 1.5 billion euros in 2020. Looking at the total turnover of the food service industry in Belgium, it dropped to 8.15 billion euros in 2020.

Observing the number of restaurants in Belgium, it correlates with the turnover development of the food industry. In 2008, roughly 29,500 restaurants could be found across Belgium, whereas by 2017 this increased to a total of 33,277 restaurants. From the total number of restaurants in Belgium, 16,622 were quick service oriented. Compared to 2008, it is an increase of 2,710 restaurants.
Michelin starred restaurants
Michelin stars are rewards given by the tire company Michelin to restaurants for their excellence in kitchen and personnel. These scores are compiled in the so-called Red Guides, rewarding a select few restaurants up to a maximum of three Michelin stars. In Belgium, approximately 105 one starred restaurants were found in 2018.
