Total number of bike shops in the Netherlands 2015-2023
Between the period of 2015 to 2018, the number of shops selling bicycles grew steadily in the Netherlands. In 2015, roughly 3030 shops were found, whereas by 2018 this increased to over 3,100 shops selling bicycles in total. Following this growth, the number of shops decreased slightly by 2.5 percent to just under 3,080 in 2020, but then inched up to again to 3,085 in 2021 before falling again to 3,030 shops by 2023.
Most of the total new bicycle sales in the Netherlands were electrical bicycles followed by city bikes. Approximately 23 percent of the new bicycle sales were normal tour or city bikes, whereas 57 percent were electric bicycles. Furthermore, the share of electric bicycles increased every year, whereas the city bike category saw an annual decrease.
Sales volume of new bicycles decreased
The number of new bicycles that were sold in the Netherlands decreased significantly within the period of 2007 to 2017, although sales started to climb after 2017. In 2007, the sales volume amounted to 1.4 million new bicycles. In 2017, this decreased to under one million sold new bicycles. In the following three years sales remained above one million and the dropped to 855,000 in 2022. Examining the sales value of new bicycles in 2022, over 1.2 billion euros' worth of electric bikes were sold. The sales value of city bicycles almost reached 145 million euros; a slight decrease compared with the previous year.
Export volume electric bikes
The export volume of electric bicycles from the Netherlands to the EU reached a total of 700,000 bikes in 2021. The number of electric bikes exported to non-EU countries increased in 2021 to just over 24,0000, down by 11.6 percent compared with 2020.
