As of 2020, optometry and optics professions in Europe are generally regulated by either a country's ministry of health or of the economy. However, the authorities regulating such professions varied from one type of service to another. For instance, in 2020, visual function services were mostly regulated by the ministry of health, whereas optical technology services were mostly under the authority of the ministry of the economy or commerce. In 2020, roughly 29 percent of ocular diagnostic services in Europe were regulated by ministries of the economy. However, when the diagnostic includes the use of drugs, these services are entirely under the authority of ministries of health.
