While ophthalmologists are doctors who are trained to treat eye conditions, optometrists are there to test a person’s eyesight. They are not qualified doctors but can prescribe glasses and contact lenses. Danemark had the highest rate of optometrists in Europe in 2020 with 5.29 professionals per 10,000 population. While Serbia had 0.11 optometrists per 10,000 population.
Wearing of eye aids in Europe
The share of people who wear spectacles in Danemark is fairly in line with the average across Europe. In 2020, approximately 60 percent of the Danish population wore glasses. Belgium and North Macedonia had the highest share of spectacle wearers at 70 percent. Additionally, Sweden and North Macedonia had the highest share of contact lens wearers in Europe with 30 percent of their population doing so in 2020.
