France had the highest number of opticians in Europe with 5.55 per 10,000 population in 2020. This was significantly more than any other country in Europe. Bulgaria, in this year, had more than four opticians per 10,000 population. While in this year, Cyprus had the highest density of dispensing optician outlets in Europe at 2.69 per 10,000.
Use of spectacles and contact lenses in Europe
Overall, just under half of the European population wears spectacles. The countries with the highest share of its population wearing glasses were Belgium and North Macedonia, with 70 percent wearing glasses in 2020. Switzerland and Norway had the second and third highest share with 67.7 and 66 percent respectively. When it comes to contact lenses, Sweden and North Macedonia had the highest shares in Europe with 30 percent of their population in 2020. The Netherlands and Cyprus joined at the top of the rankings with 25 percent of citizens wearing contact lenses.
